Flare Up

We hold two free Flare Up sessions each year at the Eau Gallie boat ramp, SR 518, Melbourne on the south-east side of the causeway. The purpose is to provide instruction on:

  • The various types of emergency signaling devices and when to use them.
  • How to deploy safely and effectively day and night-time flares.

We use expired flares – bring yours and learn how to use them.

Christmas Season is here and in spite of our best efforts we have not been able to conjure the right conditions for snow, ice and freezing temperatures to get you into the holiday mood... But, do we have a Christmas Boat Parade to ignite the Season's Spirit!

This years parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 19th starting at 6:00 PM from the upper end of the Grand Canal, just south of the Pineda Causeway.

There are several options for viewing it:

Times are approximate assuming that there will be no delay opening the three bridges for boat traffic.

Live Stream (starting around 6:28pm) provided by Bob Moore at Satellite Beach Live Canal View:

Direct links to the canal view:

The video camera will be alternating between north, east and south views. The north view will show the boats exiting Lake Shepherd starting at 6:28 PM

Mathers Bridge (starting around 7:16pm) on Banana River Dr. Moderate walk to get there, very limited parking at the bridge. Boats should arrive at 7:16 PM.

"Some people are natural born seamen. You can tell that by the way they move on a small craft. Others are clod-hoppers, and I have nothing but admiration when these people eventually, patiently, turn themselves into Sailors. A good seaman, when he boards another vessel, has his eyes everywhere - at the comfort or lack of it, at the gadgets and fancy gear. But he's watching the rigging the deck fittings, the way the gear is stowed, the way the wires are spliced, and the lines coiled. Whatever he does, he is always learning."
Tristan Jones, One Hand for Yourself, One for the Ship
